How to lose friends and alienate Bolton Wanderers fans…

Peter Harrison first came to the attention of Bolton Wanderers fans when he appeared in the BBC Panorama programme about corruption in football, in which he was secretly filmed talking about making payments to Sam Allardyce through his son Craig (Allardyce denies this).

How not to advertise your newspaper as the number one source for Bolton Wanderers news…

Mocking spelling mistakes on other websites is not something I would normally do. I’m sure the more eagle-eyed readers of this blog will have spotted a few errors on here (feel free to point them out in the comment section when you do).

I’ve made an exception today, though. Take a look at this screen shot I took from The Bolton News’ website this morning. It’s from their story about the Wanderers’ battle to fend off overtures from Manchester United and Liverpool for promising teenager Jack Sampson (note the correct spelling of his surname)…

The Bolton News

As I said at the start, mistakes are easily made and we’re all guilty at one time or another, but you’d think they might take a little more care when using a story to advertise their newspaper.

As with many Bolton Wanderers stories on The Bolton News website, this brief article ends with the frustrating line:

See the full story in Saturday’s The Bolton News.

Many media commentators will tell you that newspapers withholding content from their online versions in the hope of encouraging people to buy the print copy is a futile exercise, not least because for the likes of yours truly – and many other exiled Boltonians – buying a physical copy of the paper is impossible (unless I make an eight-hour round trip).

Can anyone who does live in Bolton tell me if they managed to spell Sampson correctly in the paper?

More importantly, did this badly subbed online piece encourage you to go and buy a copy of Saturday’s Bolton News? Or, like me, had you already read this story yesterday (in full) on Sky Sports, Premiership Latest and ClubCall?
