The ins, the outs and the shaking it all abouts at Bolton Wanderers this January transfer window

Ins
The Guardian estimates that we have £5 million to spend, which is why Joey Barton (thank God), Jimmy Bullard (another person who thinks Phil Brown is a better bet than Gary Megson) and several others (see shaking it all abouts below) will not be donning the white shirt any time soon.

Instead, Megson will be searching the bargain basement bucket for the remainder of this season’s January transfer window, for example…

Swindon Town striker Ian Cox is wanted by Bolton and, er Barnsley and Huddersfield (to be fair Spurs and Fulham are also being linked). Other cheap options could be Grant Leadbitter (Sunderland), Szabolcs Huszt (Hannover) and Mark Davies (Wolves).

What Manny Road has been reading (and thinking) about Bolton Wanderers over the last couple of days…

Bolton Wanderers Hall of Shame #2: Ricardo Vaz Te’s hair

Thursday, September 11th, 2008 | BWFC People, Ivan Campo, Ricardo Vaz Te | No Comments

Ricardo Vaz Te is hair, there and everywhere at the moment…

Following the widespread speculation about whether he actually still plays for Bolton Wanderers or not, Ricardo Vaz Te has yet again hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

This time it’s his new hair style, which has been roundly ridiculed by Wanderers fans both here and here.

Of course, we’re not adverse to a exuberant hair here at Manny Road. In fact, I’m pretty sure the club shop will already be hard at work with the straighteners on all those spare Ivan Campo wigs that never got sold.

The problem is, if you’re going to make a statement, you could at least wait until you’re in the team – or until the fans actually know who you play for – before making it. That way we don’t have to endure the torture of visiting the official BWFC website to find out about it.

What’s going on with Ricardo Vaz Te?

Thursday, September 4th, 2008 | Abdoulaye Meite, BWFC People, Ebi Smolarek, Ricardo Vaz Te | 3 Comments

Confusion reigns over whether the Portuguese striker is still a Bolton Wanderers player or not…

Is Ricardo Vaz Te still a Bolton Wanderers player? No-one seems quite sure.

When the Wanderers signed Ebi Smolarek on loan from Racing Santander last weekend, initial reports suggested that Vaz Te had gone in the opposite direction (this report said it, and this one, and this one here).

So many fans were surprised to see the Portuguese front man’s name on the substitutes list for the West Brom game. Even now, four or five days on, many fans still seem unsure of the situation with Vaz Te.

So what exactly is going on?

There was no mention of Vaz Te in the official club website’s report of the Smolarek deal, and Vaz Te is still listed on the club website’s squad list, but then that doesn’t mean much as Smolarek – who has been given the number 10 shirt after Abdoulaye Meite’s departure – isn’t yet listed on there either.

Vaz Te’s Wikipedia page also suggests he still plays for Bolton.

The rumour mill is now saying that Bolton offered him the loan move but he turned it down. Still, would it really hurt the club to come out and clarify the situation once and for all?

Another fine mess.

El-Hadji Diouf: Bolton’s Robbie Savage?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 | BWFC People, El-Hadji Diouf, Gary Megson, Mustapha Riga, Ricardo Vaz Te, Stelios | 1 Comment

Did El-Hadji Diouf deserve the love he got from Bolton Wanderers fans?

Farewell then to El-Hadji Diouf, who has got his desired move away from the Reebok Stadium to a big club Sunderland.

I always felt Diouf’s cult status amongst sections of the Wanderers support was slightly disproportionate to the number of goals he scored and games he changed. There was a little bit of the Robbie Savage syndrome about it all: we loved him because everybody else hated him so much.

The £2.8 million fee has enabled Gary Megson to go out and buy Mustapha Riga from Spanish side Levante, a player many see as a direct replacement for Diouf.

But it appears I’m not the only one who hopes Diouf’s departure – as well as that of Stelios over the summer – will give Ricardo Vaz Te another chance to shine this season.
