David Lee, The mighty Atom Speaks to Manny Road

David Lee speaks to bwfcforum & Manny Road
Those of us of a certain age will have been fortune enough to have witnessed the rise following the fall of BWFC; from the dark depths of the Football league into the bright lights of the Premier League. Along that journey we saw some
great players, great teams and great games and David Lee was at the forefront of that resurgence. After much nervous discussion we managed to secure his signature (albeit initially on loan) and his impact was instantaneous. He had pace, desire and a knack of making full backs wish they hadn’t bothered to come into work that day. He is now Bolton’s Assistant Academy Director.
He spoke to bwfcforum’s James Derbyshire:
You joined Bolton in 1992 from Southampton, did coming back to the North West play a big factor in wanting to move to Bolton?
It did yes, I had an indifferent time down at Southampton, I never really settled. When you’re a footballer you want to be playing regularly in the first team and I’d gone down with all expectations of being a regular, unfortunately things didn’t really work out for me. While I was down there, Bruce Rioch came to watch me play in a reserve game and gave me the invitation to come back and play in the north-west. To come and play back in the north-west was great, and obviously to come and play for Bolton Wanderers was just an added bonus.
You mentioned Bruce Rioch, what was he like to work with?
He was excellent. He is a disciplinarian, you knew what he wanted from you, he got every ounce of effort from you, and as long as you gave 100% regardless of whether you played good, bad or indifferent, he would stick by you. You’re not always able to play well every week but if you give 100% commitment that was what Bruce was looking for and he certainly got the best out of me. › Continue reading
Rooney “Close to Old Trafford Exit” – World Exclusive

Warren Obb explores the rumours that others dare not !

due to journalistic integrity (and the fact it might not be him) we have blanked out the ugly mush in this pic
(we would like to express, these are not necessarily the views of bwfcforum or manny road)
Superstar Shrek look-a-like Wayne Rooney was last night said to be close to an Old Trafford exit, according to sources.
The former Everton hitman, 24, has been in sensational form for the champions this season, netting his 33rd goal of the campaign in Sunday’s win over rivals Liverpool.
But in news certain to stun the Old Trafford faithful, Rooney was recently seen close to an Old Trafford exit. Our sources, who were allegedly close to the club at the time, also claim to have photos of Rooney in the compromising position. Negotiations to purchase the photos broke down in order to preserve our journalistic integrity. › Continue reading
Sex, pies and videotape… but not much Bolton Wanderers

Let’s play spot the Wanderers… in (extremely unofficial) association with The Bolton News
The Bolton News has had a bit of a redesign recently. Nothing radical, just a few tweaks here and there and some new fonts. One thing that hasn’t changed is the lack of prominence given to the Wanderers in the site’s navigation.

Manny Road’s having a change of direction too
One year in to blogging about Bolton Wanderers and it’s time to take stock. What’s gone well? What could we have done better? What should we do more of and what should we do less of (feel free to offer your own views in the comments below)?
Somewhat naively, when I started this project nearly 12 months ago I assumed I could cover everything: news, transfer gossip, injuries, debates. Not that much happens in the world of Bolton Wanderers, right?
Wrong.
The Burning Question: Would you sacrifice a place in the Premier League for a Cup?

Is Tony Kelly talking rubbish about ‘concentrating on the league’?
I’ve said before that I think Tony Kelly is doing a good job as Fans’ Liaison Officer. His one downfall, though, continues to be his column in The Bolton News, which is unerringly optimistic and only serves to wind most fans up.
Sunderland v Bolton Wanderers: The fans’ view

The Bolton Wanderers match report you won’t read in the papers (or see on Match of the Day)
Here’s what the various Bolton Wanderers discussion forums made of the 4-1 win at Sunderland…
- A 4-1 away win against anyone in the Premier League is a great result. This was our biggest ever win at Sunderland.

His newspaper column may be a load of nonsense, but the Fans Liaison Officer is doing a good job…
When Tony Kelly was appointed Bolton Wanderers’ Fans Liaison Officer at the start of the season, many fans were sceptical (including me).
Bolton Wanderers v Blackburn Rovers: The fans’ view

The Bolton Wanderers match report you won’t read in the papers or see on Match of the Day…
- Elmander’s anonymous performance is a worry for the rest of the season.
- Gardner made all the difference when he came on. He should have played from the start.
- Substitutions are one of Megson’s biggest weaknesses… why did he bring Joey O’Brien on too?
- Blackburn deserved to win and would have done but for Jason Roberts missing a sitter. If Benni McCarthy had played he would have scored and we would have lost.
- The free beer initiative is easy to mock but at least it shows Tony Kelly is doing a good job, although it was surprising to see so many empty seats in the stadium.
- The atmosphere was great to begin with but in the end the game itself killed it.
- The only exciting thing to happen was ‘Bolton in 20 pass move shock’.
- How can this be the same team that was so impressive against West Ham?
They can put on free beer, fan zones and flag waving sections as much as they like but while the team plays like this attendances are unlikely to rise.

10 reasons why Phil Gartside is better than an Arab oil baron
Wednesday, September 10th, 2008 | BWFC People, Gary Megson, Phil Gartside, Sam Allardyce, Sammy Lee, Tony Kelly | 3 Comments
Or a Russian oligarch, for that matter…
Phil Gartside doesn’t get much love from Bolton Wanderers fans. In fact, he doesn’t get any love from Bolton Wanderers fans… but I’d still rather have him in charge than any Russian oligarch of Arab oil baron.
Here’s 10 reasons why:
1. Phil Gartside actually likes football. This may be difficult to believe when you see the standard of play at the Reebok Stadium week-in, week-out, but why else would he bother? It’s not like he gets any thanks for it. And you could hardly say that running Bolton Wanderers is the equivalent of Roman Abramovich buying Chelsea as a status symbol/play thing/penis extension.
2. Phil Gartside talks to the press. OK, so he talks to the press a little too much sometimes, especially when he’s saying that his dad could beat up Sam Allardyce’s dad. But at least we know what he’s thinking, even if what he’s thinking is ‘God I’m really great me!’ Chelsea fans have no idea what Roman Abramovich is thinking because he never talks to the press. The new owners of Manchester City talk to the press but sound like complete idiots because they talk about signing Pele and Diego Maradona.
3. Phil Gartside doesn’t appoint useless ‘directors of football’… just Sammy Lee and Gary Megson.
4. If we finish 10th this season, Phil Gartside will not sack Gary Megson because he understands what it means to be successful at Bolton Wanderers. In fact, even if we finish 17th this season Phil Gartside will not sack Gary Megson.
5. Phil Gartside doesn’t pretend he’s our best mate by sitting in the stand in a Bolton shirt and downing pints of lager (while talking in a cockney accent).

6. Phil Gartside speaks with a Bolton accent. Roman Abramovich doesn’t even speak English.
7. When Phil Gartside turned his hand to running a football club, he did so because he’d supported that club all his life, not because he’d failed to buy Tottenham, Newcastle and Liverpool and thought he might as well give us a go.
8. Peter Kenyon and David Gill obsess about selling football shirts in China and Malaysia, our Phil – in a heroic stance against the commercialisation of football – commissioned a home shirt so bad that even people from Horwich wouldn’t be seen dead in it.
9. Phil Gartside has Tony Kelly as his unofficial spokesman, and if that’s not living the dream I don’t know what is.
10. Phil Gartside is not an attractive man, but at least he’s better looking than Malcolm Glazer.
What do you think? Will you be chanting ‘Gartside in’ at the next game, or is it time to get some foreign owner to turn Bolton Wanderers in to FC Boltongrad or the Bolton Bears?

A slow news week for Bolton Wanderers
Monday, September 8th, 2008 | Ali Al-Habsi, BWFC People, Jaroslaw Fojut, Jlloyd Samuel, Jussi Jaaskelainen, Phil Gartside, Tony Kelly | 1 Comment
International week brings all sorts out of the woodwork…
So what do you write about when half the squad’s on international duty and the rest are back in the training ground taking it easy, I mean working their socks off (according Jlloyd Samuel – yeah right)?
The official club website - always hot off the press with fascinating Bolton Wanderers exclusives – brought us the reassuring news that John Barnes doesn’t think we’ll get relegated; although given that the club had supported his charity tour, it would have been rude of him to say anything else really.
The Bolton News were also filling their columns with expert analysis, this time telling us that new signing Ebi Smolarek will have no problems settling in to the Premier League. And the source for these words of wisdom? Jaroslaw Fojut, the Wanderers defender whose authority is gained from his total of one (yes one) league appearance… from the bench.
In tomorrow’s news… Jade Goody backs Ali Al Habsi to keep Jussi Jaaskelainen on his toes, Tony Kelly says Phil Gartside is a jolly good man and Howard from the Halifax adverts thanks Bolton Wanderers for easing credit crunch problems by not putting the ticket prices up!
:FURTHERMORE: As this article about The Bolton News points out, if you’re going to fill the void with analysis of new signings, it helps if you know what you’re talking about.
