Recommended reading (15.10.08): The White Horse final and Gary Megson – boredom fighter

What Manny Road has been reading (and thinking) about Bolton Wanderers over the last few days…

- The Daily Telegraph’s Kevin Garside using the White Horse final of 1923 and Bolton’s hero from that day, David Jack, to demonstrate why Ashley Cole deserved every boo he got at Wembley the other day.

- The badly photoshopped picture in this call to arms on the official BWFC website, plus the unfortunate headline on this official website story, which says Gary Megson is ‘Guarding Against Monotony’ (he should certainly know what it looks like).

- Another unfortunate headline, this time on a Sky Sports story about Johan Elmander, who declares: ‘I need speed’ (perhaps Ebi Smolarek could have a word with his mates from Holland).

- Various transfer rumours about Jimmy Bullard, Ali Al-Habsi, Julio Cruz and Fabian Delph (funny how these things come out of the woodwork during international week, when there’s nothing else to write about, isn’t it?).

- And finally… listening to some Bolton Wanderers chants on this website, and wondering what the point of this site is and where they got the recordings from (well, there’s nothing better to during international week is there?).

Media Watch: Dear Media, we don’t care about Nicolas Anelka any more

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 | BWFC People, Nicolas Anelka | 1 Comment

Just because he once played for Bolton doesn’t mean we want to know every time he breaks wind

Don’t get me wrong, I liked Nicolas Anelka when he played for Bolton. But his departure in the transfer window in January really wasn’t as seismic as the media was hoping it might be.

The Wanderers staying up somewhat ruined the ‘look how stupid they were to sell Anelka’ angle that Phil Thompson was pushing on Sky Sports for most of the second half of last season.

Ashley Cole: Top story on Bolton's Euro Sport page

Despite this, the media seems to think that we Bolton fans are still obsessed with his every move. Several of the internet news pages supposedly devoted to Bolton Wanderers made mention of Chelsea’s 2-0 win against a Malaysian Select XI in a pre-season friendly yesterday. The reason for this appears to be that Anelka scored.

The worst offenders were Yahoo/Euro Sport, who saw fit to make Chelsea’s win – accompanied by a picture of Ashley Cole – the top story on their Bolton page. Chelsea beat team of unknown Asians: not exactly ‘hold the front page stuff’ is it?
