Manny Road’s having a change of direction too

One year in to blogging about Bolton Wanderers and it’s time to take stock. What’s gone well? What could we have done better? What should we do more of and what should we do less of (feel free to offer your own views in the comments below)?

Somewhat naively, when I started this project nearly 12 months ago I assumed I could cover everything: news, transfer gossip, injuries, debates. Not that much happens in the world of Bolton Wanderers, right?

Wrong.

How the national press reported the Wanderers goalless draw at the JJB Stadium

The News of the World gives top billing to Jussi Jaaskelainen, suggesting Wigan would have won at a canter but for the Bolton keeper’s heroics. The Guardian described Jaaskelainen as “immense”. The Mail is similarly complimentary, although it does point out that he almost got punished for a howler early in the game.

The Fans’ View: Newcastle v Bolton Wanderers

Monday, August 25th, 2008 | BWFC People, Gary Megson, Gavin McCann, Johan Elmander, Jussi Jaaskelainen, Kevin Nolan, Matt Taylor, Sam Allardyce, Stig Tofting | 1 Comment

The Bolton Wanderers match report you won’t read in the papers…

Given the widespread disillusionment with newspaper match reports and the coverage Bolton Wanderers get on Match of the Day, I’ve decided to start compiling alternative fan-based match reports based on the views being expressed on the various Bolton Wanderers internet message boards.

And after Sunday’s match reports focused on how great it is to see Michael Owen up and running again rather than anything to do with Bolton Wanderers, now seemed like as good a time as any to start.

So here are the most interesting conclusions from the Newcastle game…

- Now that the Premier League have now given him seven substitutes to choose from, Gary Megson should really think about making at least one of them a striker. And that probably means making more signings, because the back-ups we’ve got for Johan Elmander at the moment are all useless. It also means that Megson needs to end his unhealthy relationship with Gavin McCann.

- Having said that, Elmander was a big girl’s blouse for limping off.

- It’s all very well Megson reverting to Sam Allardyce’s long-ball tactics, but we can’t win matches like this without more creativity in midfield. In fact, there’s no way we would have lost that game if Allardyce was still in charge.

- Matt Taylor should have taken the penalty, even though he also missed one last season. In fact we’d have had more chance of scoring if Jussi Jaaskelainen or Gary Megson had taken it.

- Plus, given that we’ve missed all three of the penalties we’ve been awarded since Megson took over, he should really think about making the players practice them.

- Despite having only lost one game and being in the top half of the table, things have got so bad we should consider bringing Stig Tofting back to replace Megson as manager. And if we don’t beat West Brom Megson should definitely go.

- Gary Lineker was out of order for his ‘Nolan’s missed more chances than he’s got sisters’ jibe on Match of the Day. Or, alternatively, Lineker was spot on and Nolan should be dropped and made to do 40 days hard labour.

- Bolton Wanderers fans are clearly sick in the head for wanting to watch this 10-men-behind-the-ball dross week after week. But it could be worse, we could be Spurs.

To summarise, here’s what one fan would like to do to Gary Megson
