Your guide to all the predictions and Mystic Meggery ahead of Bolton’s trip to West Brom this afternoon

Reasons to be cheerful
1. Our chances of winning this game are better than 50/50… because under Gary Megson we have only lost 49 per cent of our matches.

2. Megson should get a good reception from the fans… the West Brom fans that is. Tony Mowbray certainly wants him to get a good welcome and Jonathan Greening has been having sleepless nights over it too, but Megson himself is not so optimistic about what the atmosphere will be like.

3. West Brom are six points adrift from safety and have lost their last three home games.

4. The tipsters in the Mirror think we’ll win – and we’ll take that, even if one of their pundits is Graham Poll.

Reasons to be fearful
5. If we play anything like we did against Fulham last weekend then we don’t stand a chance… and if that happens then the welcome Megson gets from the home fans could soon be drowned out by the booing from the Bolton end.

6. And it doesn’t help that Megson has been talking us down all week and looking over his shoulder, rather than looking where he’s going.

7. Abdoulaye Meite has been ruled out through injury, which means they might play someone who can actually defend… which is exactly what appears to have happened when their new defensive partnership stepped in against West Ham on Monday.

8. Tony Mowbray, like every other manager who’s been asked about it this season, isn’t scared of our physical approach.

9. We’ll be without Mark Davies, aka the the only player with any creativity in the centre of our midfield.

10. The referee, Howard Webb, isn’t exactly Kevin Davies’ best mate.

11. We failed to sign James Morrison from the Baggies in the January transfer window, so no doubt he’ll pop up and score the winner.

Ins
Fans of any clubs managed by Gary Megson will know the ginger one is partial to hairy moments near the bottom, but it looks like he’s now decided to tidy up (Bolton’s uninspiring midfield, not his nether regions thank God) with a Brazilian.

Yes, in a move reminiscent of Rivaldo’s brief flirtation with a move to the Reebok five years ago, Megson has signed World Cup winner Denilson, albeit on a trial basis. Let’s hope Euxton is being treated to a few gems like this…

Perhaps a deal clincher for Denilson could be the prospect of playing alongside, er, Birmingham City’s Cameron Jerome.

A less sensational – but probably more pragmatic in the long term – addition to the Wanderers midfield, could be Wolves’ Michael Kightly.

Fans hoping for a replacement for Andy O’Brien may be disappointed should Calum Davenport arrive from West Ham, judging by this write up of his credentials.

Outs
After the ridiculous speculation about a move to Chelsea, a more realistic destination for Kevin Davies could be Hull City… a move made more likely given that Davies is one of the players rumoured to have upset Megson with his lack of effort recently.

Shaking it all abouts
They’ve been linked with both Ronaldos, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Buffon and now… an £8 million move for Kevin Nolan… yeah right!

Reports of a return to the Reebok for El-Hadji Diouf also appear to have been greatly exaggerated, because if Sunderland really do want to let him go – which they don’t according to this – then Blackburn would appear to be the frontrunners.

And it appears no amount of money will tempt West Brom to sell James Morrison. It appears their manager is a little upset with ours, although that by no means makes him unique.

- Kevins Davies and Nolan both want big names to come in, and one allegedly on the cards could be former Leeds and Everton midfielder Oliver Dacourt from Inter Milan.

- But the days of Bolton signing big name foreigners seem to be in the past with Gary Megson preferring British players, which means his war of atrition with West Brom over James Morrison is likely to continue.

- Other names in the frame include Kieran Richardson,  Tal Ben Haim (surely Sam Allardyce has this one wrapped up?), Pierre Gignac, Ryan Taylor, Modeste M’Bami, Jimmy Bullard and Dietmar Hamman (yes, the same one that ditched us after a visit to the McDonald’s on Middlesbrook a couple of years back).

Out
- Burnley want Nicky Hunt, but Gary Megson has taken him back from Birmingham City and also said publicly that he thinks Hunt has a future at Bolton (he must be the only person that does).

- Heidar Helguson has gone to QPR with no-one coming in return, which means reports that we’re after their striker Dexter Blackstock may be wide of the mark.

Shaking it all about
- Club Call are still going on about a Kevin Davies move to Chelsea, despite the fact that the London club have said they won’t be signing anyone this January… and the fact that this is Kevin Davies and Chelsea for heaven’s sake!

- Square Football seem to think we’re after Sheffield Wednesday keeper Lee Grant, despite the fact that we now have both Jussi Jaaskelainen and Ali Al-Habsi tied down to long term deals.
