Bolton Wanderers Hall of Shame #1: Rivaldo’s agents

Friday, August 8th, 2008 | Sam Allardyce | 2 Comments

The Brazilian legend’s advisers become the first entrants in to our Hall of Shame

In the week Gary Megson signed a player who is literally Shittu, Bolton’s friendly against AEK Athens was a timely reminder of a time when the Wanderers set their sights a little higher.

The AEK team tonight contained Rivaldo, the Brazilian World Cup winner who Sam Allardyce made an audacious attempt to bring to the Reebok Stadium four years ago.

After much speculation and excitement, the deal eventually fell apart when Allardyce got fed up with Rivaldo having more agents than the FBI, each one making different demands.

Rob Smyth recently argued in The Guardian that Rivaldo was the best footballer since Diego Maradona.

So, for denying the Wanderers the services of a player who was better than Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane, Rivaldo’s agents are the first entrants in to the Manny Road Hall of Shame.

Let’s have a look at what we could have won…

:UPDATE: Rivaldo missed a penalty in tonight’s game, although AEK won 1-0… perhaps he felt a little guilty for screwing us over.
