Bolton’s Bottlers Deserved their Beating

And so the cup run ends. Not with glory, but in a haze of disappointment and humiliation. As Bolton rolled over in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final, the most surprised people were the players of Stoke City. They’d expected to play a side placed eighth in the Premier League. Instead they were faced with what appeared to be a pub team who’d prepared for the game with a particularly gruelling bender.

How high do I need to raise it Owen ?

In case what follows appears grudging, it should be acknowledged that Stoke deserved their win and that the margin of victory did not flatter them. As stated on these pages previously, Tony Pulis’s side are more than the one-dimensional hoofers that they often portrayed as. They are admirably organised in midfield and have willing runners who are prepared to carry the ball through the centre of the park and place it in an area inconvenient to the opposition. Should they beat Manchester City in next month’s final, it will be a good day for football.

That said, the Wanderers didn’t just dig their own grave. They embalmed the body, drove the hearse to the cemetery and heaped soil on the rotting corpse. › Continue reading

The Burning Question: Would you sacrifice a place in the Premier League for a Cup?

Is Tony Kelly talking rubbish about ‘concentrating on the league’?

I’ve said before that I think Tony Kelly is doing a good job as Fans’ Liaison Officer. His one downfall, though, continues to be his column in The Bolton News, which is unerringly optimistic and only serves to wind most fans up.

Recommended reading (15.10.08): The White Horse final and Gary Megson – boredom fighter

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 | Ali Al-Habsi, BWFC People, David Jack, Ebi Smolarek, Gary Megson, Johan Elmander | No Comments

What Manny Road has been reading (and thinking) about Bolton Wanderers over the last few days…

- The Daily Telegraph’s Kevin Garside using the White Horse final of 1923 and Bolton’s hero from that day, David Jack, to demonstrate why Ashley Cole deserved every boo he got at Wembley the other day.

- The badly photoshopped picture in this call to arms on the official BWFC website, plus the unfortunate headline on this official website story, which says Gary Megson is ‘Guarding Against Monotony’ (he should certainly know what it looks like).

- Another unfortunate headline, this time on a Sky Sports story about Johan Elmander, who declares: ‘I need speed’ (perhaps Ebi Smolarek could have a word with his mates from Holland).

- Various transfer rumours about Jimmy Bullard, Ali Al-Habsi, Julio Cruz and Fabian Delph (funny how these things come out of the woodwork during international week, when there’s nothing else to write about, isn’t it?).

- And finally… listening to some Bolton Wanderers chants on this website, and wondering what the point of this site is and where they got the recordings from (well, there’s nothing better to during international week is there?).

Ivan Campo Appreciation Society: Exhibit D

Thursday, October 9th, 2008 | BWFC People, Ivan Campo, Ivan Campo Appreciation Society, John McGinlay | No Comments

In loving memory of Bolton Wanderers legend Ivan Campo…

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a bug in the system of the BWFC latest news feed that displays on the top right-hand side of this blog. It kept crashing and I couldn’t figure out why.

Well, after some trial and error, it appears the bug was caused by the news feed from the Manchester Evening News. Since I removed the MEN feed it’s worked perfectly.

More proof that Mancunians and Boltonians don’t mix came in the MEN’s report of the Wanderers 3-1 win at West Ham. As Vital Bolton Wanderers pointed out, their assertion that Bolton had not won at Upton Park for 44 years was slightly wrong… they were a mere 41 years out.

In fact, Bolton also won at West Ham in the League Cup in 1994, when a Super John McGinlay brace helped us on our way to Wembley.

But the long wait for a league win at Upton Park was ended in 2005 when your favourite Spaniard and mine Ivan Campo scored the decisive goal.

So, for making the Mancs look stupid, we salute you Ivan…
