Bolton Wanderers and the credit crunch: The plot thickens further

The Guardian’s Icelandic banking story has gone, but the situation is still far from clear…

Last week, when I highlighted The Guardian’s piece about the credit crunch and football in which they claimed that ‘Bolton Wanderers have the most to fear’, more traffic visited this blog than on any other day in its brief three-month history.

The point of that blog post was not to spread fear and panic, but to ask why, when this news was already in the public domain and fans were already talking about it, neither the club nor The Bolton News were confirming or denying it?

As the story unfolded the following day it was necessary for me to change my original post. It transpired that The Bolton News had covered the story, although they removed it from their website almost as soon as it had been put up.

It now appears that The Guardian has also removed all references to Bolton Wanderers from their original story, which can only lead us to the conclusion that there was no truth in it whatsoever.

It’s a shame that unlike on this blog, where errors in the original post were left in and crossed out to make it clear how the story changed and evolved (more corrections to that original post have been made in the light of this one), both The Guardian and The Bolton News removed the story without any explanation either about how they got the story wrong in the first place or what the real state of the club’s finances are.

The Guardian has an excellent reputation for correcting itself, running a ‘Corrections and clarifications’ column each day. Indeed, some of the statements made about Everton in the very same column were corrected two days later. However, I can find no similar correction about Bolton.

Of course, one fundamental question still remains: how has the club been affected by the credit crunch? Clearly The Guardian were wrong about the Icelandic link, but until the club clarifies the situation, then questions will still remain – as they do with all football clubs in these uncertain times.
