The true value of a half season ticket at Bolton Wanderers

Does a half season at the Reebok Stadium ticket represent good value for money?

The club have been trying to flog half season tickets since Christmas, which is fair enough… it’s better than spending your money at the DFS sale.

Or is it?

In these tough economic times, competition for the consumer dollar is tougher than ever, so I thought it would be worth giving a little more detail about exactly what you’ll get for your money.

The official website tells you that prices for adults start at £207, which the club boasts is ‘just £23′ per game.

But what does that actually mean? The promotional literature name-checks Manchester United, Tottenham, Aston Villa and ‘the best league in the world’… but it doesn’t mention what you’ll actually get from the Wanderers.

Here’s what you can expect:

- In the first 10 league home games this season, Bolton scored just eight goals.
- That includes just three wins.
- In the last nine home games of last season we also scored eight goals.
- That also included just three wins.

So… in monetary terms, whilst it may be ‘just £23′ a game, it’s also approximately £25.88 per goal and a whopping £69 per win.

Does that represent value for money to you?

No, if I wanted to do that there’s plenty of other things I could write.

Besides, we both know football fans will continue to pay even if it is a rip off. But supporting your team doesn’t mean you can’t complain when things aren’t good enough, ie £69 per win.

Are you starting to worry a bit Chris? Megson has had at least targets he obviously really wanted – Morrison, Barton and Bullard – but hasn’t got near to a deal on any of them. We’re about half way through the transfer window now, how long is it before Megson becomes desperate and starts scraping the barrel?

That’s an interesting point. How refreshing would it be to see the club advertising the half season tickets by saying ‘ we guarantee we will bring in at least £10 million worth of new talent before the end of January… so come on down for your season tickets now!’ ???

Of course they’ll never do it and I kind of understand why… a few club Presidents in Spain have ended up with egg on their face after promising to sign players they could never deliver.

But with attendance falling the way they are I just think they need to be a bit more innovative with the way they promote these things rather than just churning some cliche about ‘the best league in the world’… it didn’t look that great when we were playing West Brom, or Blackburn or even Man City at home this season.

By scraping the barrel do you mean Danny Shittu, Grzegorz Rasiak?

Let’s hope not. To be fair Megson’s signed more good than bad but you do have to think that the squad seems so small that he will have to buy someone, even if they are duffers…

You read my mind with those players Chris.
Going back to your previous blog post about what Megson can learn from other managers, do you think he could do with a bit more persistence and should stop being so stubborn? Look at the video on this story: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11672_4796536,00.html
It seemed like he made a bid, got rejected, and then got the hump. Maybe he should have upped his bid a little? Offered other incentives rather than just give up at the first attempt? I mean I’m certain that Ronaldo will go to Madrid, ‘cos they’re bloody persistent. Megson seems to give up at the first hurdle. It doesn’t fill me with confidence that after the first stab the manager gives up, especially given our recent form. It can’t be encouraging any new fans to come, when we’re reaching the bottom of Megson’s wish list can it?
