Manny Road gets ready for battle (Pic: Gidzy, some rights reserved)

The media are looking for a victim and the Bolton Wanderers boss might not get such an easy ride this season

Disclaimer: Before we get started, it’s worth pointing out that in preparation for writing this post Manny Road has kitted up in full body armour in anticipation of the backlash likely to come my way. Manny Road is well aware that it’s a marathon not a sprint, that it was only one game, and that but for the legs of Marton Fulop we might well have got a point against Sunderland on Saturday.

So what’s my point? Why is Manny Road stoking the fires of negativity after just one game?

The answer is that I’m not. I’m merely pointing out that others in the media are starting to sound a little less sympathetic towards Gary Megson, who I believe got a pretty easy ride in the press last season.

Here’s a rough sketch of the timeline of attitudes towards Megson during his time at Bolton Wanderers…

Phase 1: Bolton fans outraged by Megson’s appointment, the media – shocked that someone with his track record has been given another chance – are largely in agreement.
Phase 2: Megson keeps Bolton up, fans are still largely unsure but the media – probably just relieved that the lack of anything interesting happening at the Reebok means they don’t have to write about Bolton much anymore – think he’s done a great job.
Phase 3: Megson continues to keep Bolton on an even keel, the media still think he’s doing a great job and slag fans off for not supporting him.

But some of the reports over the weekend suggest we may now be entering a new phase, one in which the fans continue to be disillusioned with Megson (if you think it’s just me, see if you can find any optimism or positivity in reaction to Saturday’s result over on the BWFC Facebook page) and the media start to see our (well, some of us) point again.

Exhibit A: The Bolton News finally get round to pointing out how, despite slashing prices, the club can barely give season tickets away.

Exhibit B: Following on from Daniel Taylor’s pre-season mauling of Megson, The Guardian continues to stick the boot in in their Sunderland match report, saying Bolton were devoid of tactics, ‘insipid, pedestrian and uninspiring’, and that none of Megson’s summer signings made any kind of impact.

Megson got any easy ride from the media last season. There were enough managerial-merry-go-round type stories elsewhere (Newcastle, Tottenham, Portsmouth) to prevent the media from smelling blood at the Reebok. That meant that when the fans got on Megson’s back, it inspired sympathy for the Wanderers boss among the press rather than any kind of killer instinct.

But this season, with the usual candidates for implosion – Spurs, West Ham, Man City – all looking fairly well set, the press may need to seek its prey elsewhere. Newbies are the usual target, but Roberto Martinez (playing the kind of football Bolton fans can only dream of right now) got off to a flier with Wigan at Aston Villa, and most of the other teams of Bolton’s stature – Stoke, Hull, Wolves et al -are all still content enough in the ‘grateful just to be here’ stage of their Premier League lives to get rid of the managers that got them there just yet.

So far Phil Gartside has been able to stave off calls for Gary Megson’s head, but once the fans, media and bank manager (once he counts up those season ticket receipts) are in unison, the only thing that will save Megson is an above average run of results/league position over the next couple of months – and on Saturday’s evidence, it’s difficult to see how this season is going to be any different from last year’s stop-start campaign.

OK, Manny Road is braced… unleash your fury in the comments below…

I agree completley, I never thought Megson would be as childish and stubborn as to pick to drop two good, although not magnificent by any stretch, full backs in place of the embrassing pub football exploits of Robinson and Ricketts. It sums the man up, he’s so stubborn that he persists with Elmander, Muamba and now by the looks of things our comedy duo defenders, no matter how poor they play. I’d be embarrassed to see Paul Robinson in a sunday league team…I fear for our future

i have a season ticket and on saturday i felt like chucking it in Mr Megsons face he has now destroyed our club with the signings he has made two defenders i say knight as well to make it 3 are not as good as the ones we had on the park last season the midfield is missing a creative player oh yes he was on the bench mark davis he is our creative midfielder according to megson Elmander i have to say ran his legs off and i think he will get the breaks when we can get Lee playing but a lot on that young mans shoulders. Saturdays performance was the worst I have seen since pre big Sam. who would we get to replace him if a manager is unemployed that means he has not performed as well. We have 12 days to the end of the transfer window do we give it to megson or a new manager that is upto MR GARSIDE but i cnat see a point until portsmouth then we will be in trouble moan over

Good article, and I think you’ve hit it square on the head. If we get many repeats of Saturday’s game, I’m doubtful he will finish the season. We got competition for the fullbacks despite other places desperately requiring some investment. None of the signings looked to have improved us.

Wow, people agreeing with me. Perhaps I’ll take the body armour off. Robinson is a signing I really don’t understand. I’ve seen him play quite a bit at both Watford and West Brom and he was never anything more than effective. I thought Samuel did OK last season, why he’s been dropped I’ve no idea…

The problem with Mr Mugson is that he is insistent on playing the players he has signed. Rather than signing these players and letting them settle in, then push the previous first team players for their places, he puts them in straight away, as if to make a point! To play an almost completely new back four was ridiculous! They were all over the place! Even if all the signings had been big quality names, it still would have been a big ask to gel on the first day of the season.
The man has dismantled teams in the past and created all sorts of problems. He doesn’t seem to have a clue! Where is our creative midfielder and striker that we are crying out for? He has now had both time and money and nothing seems to be taking shape.
A very frustrated and worried wanderer!

Foreboding, forewarning, foreseeable , fooorr the love of Christ… were the pre season signings and friendlies not a taster enough of things to come , Megson out now!
Sunderland are no world beaters but with a new striker, Steve Bruce at the helm, and a board willing to invest in the clubs future, at least their long suffering fans can see the light as opposed to the very dark tunnel we are about to enter into this season. Even Hull looked slick on day one …..oh my God, what am I saying!

Quite a lot of the press seemed to be under the impression that Wanderers’ supporters were optimistic about this season. Well, if any of them were, that seems to have quickly dissipated. Whatever Megson thought he was doing on Saturday has backfired on him spectacularly, beinging more fans into the Anti-Megson fold. The defence were made to look ordinary by a team that couldn’t hit a barn door for the majority of last season. The decision to drop two mainstays of last season’s rush to 13th, pretty much alienating one of them (and a fans favourite at that) proves once again his lack of man management skills. I was happy to give him until November to see how he did (as much as I dislike the man and the way he runs the club). However, after the dismal summer, pre-season and Saturday I am hastily changing my mind.

I will not set foot in th rebok while Megson is in charge, I was a season ticket holder for over 30 years. But is the problem deeper than Megson ? How much influence have the Warburton’s and Gartside got over Davis .Why wasn’t Big Sam given the money that Megson has wasted,His signings McC

I am totally confused . I watch us live on the net for free.I would love to come back to to watch live football ,. BUT I REFUSE TO PAY MEGSONS WAGES , BY THE WAY WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME WE WON???

I have not renewed my season tickets this season. The minute that Gary Megson departs I will go and purchase them. I do not care who comes in it simply cannot be worse than watching that performance last Saturday. I stupidly accepted an invitation to a Friends box when I could have stayed home and paired my socks. This task would have been more enjoyable.

I am not convinced that Megson knows what he is doing, he tend to talk the talk and not implement the tactics. He knows alot about the politics of the game but I am not sure about the tactics required. All the loaness last season were waste of time and not the way forward, I was surprised that he watched the reserves as he never does.
Vas te has not been supported by Megson at all except from the other trainers etc, If you are to sell players for soo cheap and they can still contribute at the top level, so why are you selling him (McCann). Even the position he is playing the players are not helpful as we all know
He has signed hard woking men (not sure about their skills or creativity) and left out the most important aspects (midfield and attack). I also assume that he cannot get over the fact that he paid too much for Elmander to allow others time to blend with the team. Obadeyi has been an inspiration with the reserves but 7-10 minutes before final whistle will not help him with the first team (I’m sure he would have scored more goals that our big money striker).
We played the whole pre-season with just limited players that Megson wants and he did not give time to other player (how can he get to have a back up plan or style).
Alot of the players are not happy (very good source) except 4-5 players, we cannot have a team like this and it is ovious with Gretar over the weekend. I can name up to 7 players that are not happy but I am concerned about how to make them happy and not adding more to their problems (as megson would bounce on them)
Megson, pls listen to others and support your players (not all those comments you are making about some players) those comments dont bind teams, they divide teams.

Why all the gloom and doom, the pissing and moaning? I, for one, am delighted with the poor start, and may it continue. This is the only way we will see the long-awaited departure of the re-tread failure Gary Megson. If it weren’t for the fact that I now live in California, I would be on the terraces at the Reebok, cheering (silently) every opposition goal. We know now that muddling mediocrity will keep Megson in his job. Only abject failure to get results on the field will force the stubbornly inept Gartside to concede that his gamble of keeping Bolton up without having to pay what a talented and inspirational young manager is worth has failed, and finally capitulate to good sense. Only the awful prospect of an equally inept re-cycled has-been taking Megson’s place gives me reason for anxiety. But, surely, he couldn’t make the same mistake twice? I will be cheering on Phil Brown’s men tomorrow ( let’s not forget that Phil Brown, as caretaker manager before Sam Allardyce, did a very creditable job) and hoping that the young American prospect Josey Altidore puts at least one in the back of the net. Yes, as a Farnworth lad, now a long-time resident of the US, I do have divided loyalties. But the Wanderers will always be closest to my heart. Roll on the guillotine, it’s got Megson’s name etched on it.

I agree Geoff, I was not unhappy when we lost today as losing the next 7 games is the only thing that will force Gartside and the board to act. We are a really poor side at the moment and it makes me laugh when the media keep pumping out news of us signing players that are already signed. Well done Gary, I look forward to the Bolton News frenzy about the number of contract extentions you have signed. It is the only news we have.
