The Burning Question: Why do Bolton never beat the big four any more?
Saturday December 27th, 2008
Has Gary Megson made us a soft touch against the big boys?
There was a time when the Premier League’s big four feared playing Bolton Wanderers.
During the Sam Allardyce era the Whites beat all of them – Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea – at one time or another.
Last season – our first full one in the Premier League without Allardyce – we managed just four points against big four.
This season has been even worse. We’ve lost all five games we’ve played against the big four, and we’ve also lost against the two teams closest to breaking in to the top four: Everton and Aston Villa.
After the defeat to Liverpool yesterday, some fans said that it was as if we now expected to lose games against the big teams.
Gary Megson’s comments on Match of the Day, when he said that Bolton’s season won’t be defined by games against the likes of Liverpool, certainly seems to back that up.
So, is Megson to blame for our poor form against the big four? Has he got his tactics all wrong for these kinds of games?
Should Bolton look to attack the big four like Phil Brown’s Hull City do?
Why has Bolton’s form against the big teams been so poor this season?
Have your say in the comment box below.

We had a difficult season last year but we are now better.Gary has became the manager of the month november. He did well.I find that he deserves more respect from every Bolton fan. There are smoe fans that hate Gary but he has done well.He has kept us in the premier league and we’re now a lot better than last season. The reason why we’re not winning games against so called big four teams.I will explain that. The first we are not the best team .The second we have a lack of creativity .The third we are not a lucky team.We work every game hard as possible.I’m sure that we will finish in the top 10 but we’ve to make tranfers for to strenghten our team. The next game against a top 4 team is against Arsenal.I’m sure that we’ll get a good result. We’ve to be focused for the Wigan Clash.
megson is right, i understand what he means, it is not as though we are going to be relegated just because we dont beat teams like liverpool, not many teams even take away points from the top four.
megson is doing well considering we were bottom of the league when he took over and he kept us up. he has made good signings since he took over with the exception of muamba and if he gets the money in this transfer window i’m sure we will be challenging for europe this season never mind in 3 or 4 seasons.
like Kevin nolan has said we are in the process of recovery from the sammy lee disaster and i’m sure once Gary Megson has put his own stamp on the club we will be in europe and putting up more of a fight against the big four. it doesn’t really matter at the moment as long as we beat the teams that we are expected to.
whatever megson does everyone dislikes him and i think everyone should get off his back.

Warrick Rimmer and Greavo would be cringeing!!
As an example, can someone please show our “motivational and inspirational captain “ the league table and points difference between us and bottom three!!
He has been quoted by the BEN as playing down the importance of victory in Sunday’s game against rivals Wigan Athletic. “It isn’t crucial – it is nothing like last year,” he said, referring to Wigan’s last visit when Wanderers were hovering just a point above the relegation zone.
God knows what the team talks are like when playing the top 4 ,” Its will be hard lads, but at least lets try and score one for Jussi’s sake”
What a Nxx head he is!! “Yes we can Whites ” ( apologies e to Obahma and Thomas the Tank Engine)
Big Sam, please take him away, hes all yours and hopefully he can motivate Rovers into the Fizzy Pop league with such derby battle calls!!
