Pedro finds another hole in Bolton Wanderers’ season tickets PR

Will the Reebok Stadium be a lonely place for BWFC season ticket holders next season?
I wrote over a month ago about the rather vague positive news coming out of the club regarding season ticket sales this summer. The club seemed extremely keen to reassure fans that they wouldn’t be alone at the Reebok next season.
I was sceptical about the reports, mainly because Bwfc.co.uk claimed that fans had written in praise of the club’s season ticket pricing in their droves, but they failed to actually quote any of these cock-a-hoop fans. Nor did they make public the actual number of season tickets sold to that date.
Since then it’s all gone quiet on the season ticket front, except that is for a rumour on The Bolton News forum in which one fan claims to have heard sales are as low as 7,000.
Of course, there’s no source quite so unreliable as “some bloke on a forum”. It’s the web 2.0 version of “a mate of a mate who met some bloke in a pub” – and the person in question in this case doesn’t necessarily do their credibility any favours by calling himself ‘Pedro’.
But it does beg the question, why have we not been told how many season tickets have been sold? The figures being quoted would be a significant reduction on last season and would require several awkward questions to be answered:
- How do these sales figures compare with other, similar Premier League clubs?
- Given that the club slashed the prices, why are people staying away (credit crunch probably plays a part, but it’s hard not to assume the quality of football played under Gary Megson is just as big as the financial factor)?
- How does this impact on the club’s finances?
- Why has the lack of scheduled Sky TV coverage not encouraged more people to buy tickets, as predicted by commercial director Gareth Moores a few weeks ago (again, the Megson factor comes to mind)?
I’d be delighted to be told that the Reebok Stadium will not be a lonely place for Bolton Wanderers season ticket holders next season. I’d much prefer my team to be cheered on by a full house every week. But until we’re told exactly how many tickets have been sold, it’s hard not to listen to the likes of Pedro and other – probably not very well-informed – internet doom mongers. Let’s have some transparency and honesty for once.
Pedro ends his post by by laying down the gauntlet to his local paper to find out what’s really going on:
Now BN I challenge you to do the right thing and INVESTIGATE!
Given how readily The Bolton News churned out the original season ticket story with little thought for analysis or investigation, we won’t be holding our breath.
If you have any Pedro-esque insights of your own, feel free to comment below…

I attended only nine games in the first part of last season. then gave up because of the lack of entertainment / flair. The price wasn’t worth it when compared with (say) going to the Octagon theatre to sit in warm and comfort with performers who realise the audience is important.
I will give BW a chance in the first month or two but may resort to listening top radio commentaries and watching Sky highlights later in the evning which shows almost all the action anyway.
I might have been more willing if NBW had realised that there are many retired (at 60yoa) people who cannot afford to pay the full amount straight off for a season ticket. Why don’t the 60+ pensioners get concessions like everywhere else?

Are no other Bolton fans disgusted with the blatent disregard for faith in our team, as shown by the several bloggers and commentors of these websites? What is this rubbish about “quality of football played under Gary Megson”? You probably were not complaining when a far more basic system played under Allardyce ( a team full of 6ft Xinches brutes lumping it up to big kev ) worked wonders and gained us European recognition. Obviously the system worked, but if you remember rightly, this was some of the dullest football ever seen. As soon as someone tried to change this system, since there were many complaints of boring football, they are scruitenised for a lack of success. Megson has don’t exactly what many fans would have aimed to have done: avoided relegation, found a commanding centre half who will only improve in the next 5+ years, and changed the formation to a 4-4-2. True some things haven’t gone to plan eg. Lack of elmander goals, however the Ginger mourinho has proved his ability as a manager before and he will again. Ganging up on a manager that has transformed our club for the better is insane, and I hope that people who make idiotic comments such as the ones in this blog will eat their words later in the season. Btw “I will give BW a chance in the first month or two”, oh really! Well that is generous of you! I hope you do keep cozy and warm in the octagen or in front of the tv. If you can afford sky tv, you can afford football tickets you prat.
John – Saying that we play the same style of football under Megson as we did under Allardyce is a massive over-simplification. Just because neither style is especially Brazil-esque or pretty, doesn’t they’re the same. Allardyce’s football, whilst undoubtedly ugly, was never negative. He always had a game plan to win the game. Megson is out and out negative and defensive. I don’t ever remember Bolton playing three defensive midfielders in 1 game like we did at Fulham last year, nor did we go to places like Old Trafford under Allardyce like we do under Megson.
As for showing him respect, I refer you to this… http://mannyroad.com/gary-megson-calls-bolton-wanderers-fans-pathetic/29/01/2009/

More proof, if ever it was needed, that Bolton Wanderers have the most negative fans, board, manager and bloggers in the PL
August 5, 2009
But then we have a lot to be negative about dont we?

Not in comparison with the dozens of clubs, arguably bigger than Bolton yet find themselves below us in footballing league

Maybe we could get a balanced sporting journalistic comment on this whole issue from Gordon Shorrocks (There is always a first time you know!!)
Come on White’s fans , lighten up and get excited about the new season. Look on the bright side we are still there !!Look at the barcodes to get things in perspective ( nice one Nobby !) . Ha ha bigger clubs my arse, we’ve seen them come and go ( Go on youuu smoggies ) !!
And finally lets focus on real issues and petition to adopt a new club mascot for a change of luck this season – perhaps Susan Boyle as the club mascot….as our own live pre match singing dog to get us in the party mood, instead of that useless friggin lion and the drums !

this post will be the last i read on Manny Road. just moaning for moaning’s sake.
me? i’m just chuffed, and continually so, that we’re in the top flight at all and, for the most part, holding our own. we’re a tiny club, albeit with a great history, and that’s a distant one, and there’s plenty of ‘bigger’ clubs who’d kill to be in our position.
i’m no massive fan of Megson either but crapping on about him isn’t going to get rid. actually, crap on all you like because as i said, i won’t be reading any more.
tara.

Well said Oliver. Reading Manny Road you almost get the impression that there are certian Wanderers fans who are willing us to lose, just so they can turn around to Megson and the pro Megson fans and give them the most pointless ‘I told you so.’ You get the feeling that some people will never be happy…

We certainly do not want our team to do badly and I do not feel that our supporters are moaning about the players performance. I think there are many who question Mr Megson’s approach to the game at times. I am not a Megson fan but I have to accept that he has made some decent signings along with some surprising ones but then all managers do that. I hope that Elmander starts to produce the goods because if he does not do it this season then I do not think he ever will. We really do need a goal scorer up front.
Oliver, Heywood Wanderer… You’re right, Manny Road does moan a lot, but that’s kind of the point. I leave the sugar-coated stuff to The Bolton News. You’ll notice Manny Road doesn’t publish every day, only when we feel there is something genuine to moan about, so it’s not just moaning for moaning’s sake. Manny Road also knows it’s not always right, which is why I invite you guys to correct/ammend/lambast us for talking nonsense in the comments, as you have done here. Therefore, I’ll be sorry to lose you as readers. Comments like yours make this blog better, so I hope the next time I have moan you’ll stop by again to put me straight.

I’m just getting sick of this culture of fans vs megson. It’s almost like certain fans can’t share in the joy of Bolton Wanderers win due to this pettiness. I bet Norwich, Southampton, Newcastle and Charlton fans would love being 13th in the PL, with or without Mr Megson and his negative football
Glad you came back HeywoodWanderer, especially as you make such a valid a point about those other clubs. But to me it’s not as simple as just winning or losing matches, where we are in the league or even the standard of the football… it’s much more complicated than that. I just feel there’s a very negative vibe around the whole club, and that that largely comes from Megson (although admittedly the fans play their part too). It’s difficult to explain, but it’s a bit like when your sister gets a boyfriend and you don’t approve. You don’t know why you don’t like him, but you just know he’s wrong ‘un..

I think the main difference between Megson and Allardyce from my POV is that Sam always went out to win a match, however big/small the team is/was. I remember Campo’s first goal was against Liverpool, we lost 2-3 if I remember rightly, but we gave it a bloody good go. I remember when Ferdinand scored against United at the Reebok too. Under Sam, we always got in the big team’s faces, upped our game, made it uncomfortable for them, and sometimes got a result. Under Megson, I haven’t even expected a draw from the eight games against the “big four”. We didn’t even try against Northampton Town last season, and played some of the worst football I’ve ever seen. Anyway, there’s my two pence on why the majority of the fans are against Megson, I look forward to Oliver/Heywood’s response (if they’re still reading).
Nice link Ben. Here’s another.. Not often you hear the words ‘Bolton Wanderers’ and ‘extravaganza of football’ in the same breath these days… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrY9hngG0Ok&feature=related
