So how accurate were all those transfer window rumours?

What happened to the other 51 players Bolton were supposed to sign…

Most Premier League managers seem to agree that the January transfer window is a complete circus that benefits nobody.

Taking a look at all the players Bolton were linked with over the last 33 days, you can see where the managers are coming from.

Burnden Aces kept an extensive list of all the transfer rumours that included Bolton Wanderers, and it reveals a whopping 54 players were linked with moves to the Reebok Stadium. That’s one short of five football teams’ worth of players.

At the same time, 11 players were linked with moves away from Bolton, meaning that if every rumour had been true, Gary Megson would now have 43 more players to choose from than he did on December 31st (Megson probably wouldn’t mind, but the club’s bank manager might have something to say about it).

Of course, not every rumour was true. In fact of those 65 rumoured deals, only six (three in, three out) turned out to be right.

That means that nearly 90 per cent of transfer window stories you read in the newspapers and other media outlets – or the ones reading relating to Bolton Wanderers at least – are complete tosh will never happen.
