Do you trust Gary Megson with your money?

The Bolton Wanderers manager wants more cash to splash… does he deserve it?

Gary Megson spent most of last season complaining about the size of his squad and he’s continued to send not-so-subtle messages to Phil Gartside and the Bolton Wanderers bank manager since the campaign ended.

Megson told The Bolton News that he’s confident of attracting big names to the Reebok, but do you trust him to spend your hard-spent season ticket cash wisely?

Let’s look at the evidence…

Of Megson’s signings so far, it’s fair to say that two – Gary Cahill and Matt Taylor – have proven to be outstanding. Gretar Steinsson has also done very well, although I’d stop short of putting him up there with Cahill and Taylor. One other, Mark Davies, has done enough to suggest he’s got what it takes.

The rest of the story is less impressive. The jury is still very much out on Johan Elmander and Fabrice Muamba. Their verdict will be delivered next season.

No such deliberation is required for the rest, all of whom were easily found guilty of not doing enough. The culprits were Tamir Cohen (one swallow doesn’t make a summer), Danny Shittu (enough said), Mustapha Riga (a lof of huff but not enough puff), Ebi Smolarek (unlucky not to get more chances), Sebastien Puygrenier (unlucky to get injured) and Ariza Makukula (worst Wanderer ever?).

So that’s four good signings out of 12. Of course, even Alex Ferguson gets it wrong sometimes (Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba), but is a one in three ratio good enough to earn Megson another Bolton Wanderers cheque book?

But unfair to include the three loan signings, which makes it 4 out of nine

megson has done brilliantly as manager! he is the best thing to happen to the club in a while, theyre in profit since he took over, he has got rid of the deadwood that nearly took us down and is showing ambition in trying to lure veloso to fortress reebok. lay off the ginger one!

Why is it unfair to include loans? They’re still signings, i.e. players brought in to improve the team… which none of them did.

Brought in at no cost as a short term measure which he had the good sense not to make permanent. a club the size of bolton relies on short term loan signings and to be fair everyone was an international player. with potential targets like martinez, veloso and distin shows ambition and will help push us towards europe.

No cost except their wages…

Makakula the worst Wanderer ever? Two words, Gregorz Rasiak, another Megson buy, we lost Anelka and got Rasiak that January. He seems to pick out good defenders but hasn’t got a clue when it comes to forwards.

Given that none of these signings cost all that much, Elmander excepted, and at least three have been very good (I throw Steinsson into that group and maybe Mark Davies), he’s done well enough. I take your point on the loan signings but it still shows some prudence. And I was hoping in January that we’d sign Jimmy Bullard but it’s possible we missed a bullet there.

So yeah, I say let him keep looking for good players in the 5mm pound range (especially if Cahill does end up going to Arsenal or somewhere). The club definitely doesn’t need “big names” just solid players, especially in central midfield.

first of all sean , wtf are you smoking?? megson has taken the ambition out of this club and taken it back to the state we were in in 2002, fighting for premier league survival season after season. and what sort of huge players are likely to be attracted by the prospect of playing under a manager with no personality or ambition and a club that has no fans, and the small number of fans we do have are calling for the managers head. We’re always rumoured to buy ‘big name’ players but never seem to buy them anymore because megson seems set on buying players for half of their asking price, the worst haggler in the history of football management.mugson has no creativity and has introduced unimaginative negative football, who seems content on sacrificing 24 points against the ‘big boys’ even though in the past we have proven to be more than capable of competing against them. every anti megson fan gets even more frustrated by the praise he gets from football pundits, and even Mr Fartside, who will stick by him through thick and thin, beacause he’s the cheap option, makes u feel for the boro fans.

Interesting, 3 of the 4 best signings were the 3 British players. Perhaps traveling farther afield makes a manager look like he’s leaving no stone unturned and searching the globe for bargains, while the manager isn’t really acting very wisely by bringing in a United Nations of transfers. Because in fact those “bargains” are more likely to see their value go down to $0 when faced with world-class competition for the first time than to be actual bargains.

i totally agree with sean. LAY OFF THE GINGER 1. lol
like every new manager at a club they have a lot of pressure on them, but now megson has settled down at the reebok its time to see what he’s made of, and to bring new changes and tactics to the club. And because the premier league has changed so much over the past years i think its time to see a new bolton wanderers, get rid of most of the squad and use that money to bring in some decent players for a change. So Mr. Gartside get your hand in your pocket and splash that cash!!!
