Everton 3-0 Bolton: The fans’ view
Sunday February 8th, 2009
The Bolton Wanderers match report you won’t read in the papers (or see on Match of the Day)
Here’s what the various Bolton Wanderers message boards made of the 3-0 hammering at Goodison Park:
- “The gulf in class was embarrassing, especially considering Everton played 120 minutes in mid week.”
- “We got absolutely battered: no passion, no skill, no ideas” … “we are on the edge of the abyss.”
- “Gary Megson went way over the top today playing five at the back. He has to go” … “Gretar Steinsson in midfield, Andy O’Brien at right back? He got it totally wrong” … “we completely surrendered the midfield battle.”
- “Why didn’t we get at them rather than letting them have the ball and dominate the play. It’s too negative” … “Everton are nothing special” … “or have they been added to the list, along with the top four, of teams that we just don’t even bother against?”
- “Perhaps selling Kevin Nolan wasn’t such a great idea after all, he’d have got stuck in more than Mark Davies did today.”
- “Megson’s post-match comments were just complete nonsense.” … “blaming everyone else as usual.”
- “Ariza Makukula is not even fit to play in the Championship” … “He has no first touch and is even worse than Mario Jardel.”
- “Where was Ricardo Gardner?”
- “Alan Gowling on GMR said Bolton’s performance was the worst he could remember by a Premier League side.”
- “If this was a blip then fine, but if we really are as bad as this performance suggests then we could well go down.”
OR
- “The fans should stay off Megson’s back. It’s not a game we could realistically expect to win” … “we’ll probably still finish the season somewhere between 8th and 10th.”
- “Why is it that the fans only come out in force on the message boards when we’ve lost?” … “It’s just one bad performance, everyone needs to calm down.”
- “Let’s forget this game. Looking at our next six games, there’s plenty of points up for grabs over the next few weeks.”

looking from the other side of the fence (as an evertonian)i don’t think you will go down. Megson’s gameplan did surprise me & i was expecting more from you on the whole. i was surprised Gardner wasn’t playing for a start & i think overall you did play in to our hands. I thought Mark Davies was probably your liveliest player & seemed to be one of only 3 players who seemed arsed to have a go (other 2 being Cahill & Jaskelienen). boro, fulham, newcastle & hull have all been to Goodison & played a lot worse than you. I hope you pull through this spell but unless megson starts to inspire belief its going to be tough. Can any wanderers fan tell me why you only had 6 named subs yesterday ? is there no one in the reserves who could take a space on the bench even for the experience of the day. Good luck for the rest of the season.
