How to lose friends and alienate people, by Gary Megson

Another fine PR mess from the Bolton boss

Gary Megson is a nice man, don’t you think? He never slags off his opponents like that nasty Mr Benitez does. And he never discredits other teams, like that horrible Mr Wenger.

Instead, that nice Mr Megson can often be heard singing the praises of his fellow Premier League managers and their teams, usually a day or two before those managers and their teams take three points off Bolton Wanderers.

Fans of those other teams even go on the internet, from time to time, to congratulate us on having such a thoroughly nice man as our manager.

If only that nice Mr Megson could be a little nicer to his own kind. To the people that pay his (probably rather generous) salary.

Instead, he thinks that people who pay £20, £30, sometimes even £40 or £50 to watch his team have no right to criticise them when they throw away two-goal leads. He thinks that supporters who have not seen their team win in over a month should sit in silence as they watch their team capitulate.

He also thinks that Bolton fans should be grateful to have a team that frequently play dour football and rarely show any real willingness or desire to score goals and win games.

In short, he thinks we are – and this was his exact word – “pathetic”.

That’s right. The man who surrendered our place in the Uefa Cup last season, the man who thought Grzegorz Rasiak and Danny Shittu were capable of playing the Premier League, the man who couldn’t be bothered to use a substitute against Everton even though we didn’t look like scoring in a million years, the man who at Fulham and Tottenham this season oversaw two of the worst performances I and many others have ever seen from a Bolton Wanderers team (need I go on?)… he thinks we’re “pathetic”.

Well done, Gary. You just ruined any slim chance you may have had of earning the respect of Bolton fans.

Disagree? Have your say in the comments section below…

I agree with Gary Megson. No one has given him a chance. He’s right.

Totally agree. If we had gone at Blackburn for 10 mins in the 2nd half, we would have scored again and killed the game off.

We have lost 13 league games this season – further proof we are not capable of keeping clean sheets so why put all 11 men behind the ball?

We’ll, I might be one of those ‘pathetic’ fans, but I don’t get rewarded for losing in my job with a sunshine break to Dubai. Wake up Gary and get into the real world. You and your tactics are pathetic – not the fans!

As a Forest fan, I do feel for you Bolton supporters. Megson did his best to ruin our club, with the most negative football I’ve ever seen. He critisized us too, it seems he doesn’t understand that you pay your money to be entertained, not watch his negative, drab football. He took us down from the championship to league one, got us knocked out of both cups early to league two teams, and resigned in the Feb when we were 4 points off relegation. He said his resignation cost him £500,000, but what about the cost to Forest as a club? Oh, by the way, there was 13 games left when he went, we only lost 1 and finished 2 points off the play-offs after playing entertaining, attacking football. Go figure.

If supporting and watching a football team was purely about hoping they finish in or above a certain position, Megson would have a point. He has, however, turned us into everything we were accused of being under Allardyce – a negative, overly physical team with depressingly little invention. So many hard workers, with no flair chucked in to make that one spark which can turn matches in our favour.

Oh, and Rasiak’s the worst Polish international striker for a good 20 years.
