How Gary Megson should really be judged

Empty seats, above anything else, are what could do for the Bolton manager
There was an interesting discussion among some of Manny Road’s Twitter followers on Sunday after the (later denied by the club) news that Owen Coyle is being lined up to replace Gary Megson.
The response of some fans seemed to be that the club’s denial – coupled with the win over West Ham a day earlier that edged the Whites closer to survival – would be enough to keep Megson’s job safe.
But I believe there’s another factor that’s being overlooked when people talk about Megson’s long-term job security.
What happens in the summer if there is a significant reduction in season ticket sales?
Fans sitting in the stand chanting abuse at the manager is one thing, but when they start to hit Phil Gartside where it really hurts – in the club’s pockets – then he might just have to start listening.
The club has done a good job of bucking the Premier League trend and keeping attendances up this season, but next summer will be the first since the recession really began to bite.
Shallower pockets and Megson’s failure to win over fans means that many could hold fire on renewing their season tickets – even if he does manage to keep the Wanderers in the Premier League.
Cutting prices has already been done, and if Gartside is to avoid even more empty seats next season, he may have no choice but to find a manager better capable of galvanizing the fans and filling the Reebok.

Yawn. Megson could get us into the Champions League and people like you would still moan. The fact is that attendances at matches have never been great throughout the history of the club. While other teams look back at 40k+ regualr attendances in the old days, we were lucky to average in the late 20ks in the 1950s when we were appearing in Cup Finals. Empty seats, attendances of about 19k is the average for the club.
At least Megson is trying to rebuild the club from the bottom upwards rather than what we can now see as Allardyce’s legacy – nothing!
a walsh i think your missing the point, i know of alot of fans who have had season tickets for several years not renewed because megson is in charge.

I think there are so many people who are determined for Megson to fail. I’m still unconvinced but I like the type of player he is signing and I sort of understand what he’s trying to do.
This weekend was the first time that I saw him make a tactical decision and it actually have a positive effect.
The jury is still out as far as I’m concerned but what I won’t do it run down the manager for the sake of it because that is what everyone around me is doing. I have my own opinion and I’m not afraid of having one.
The support has been better of late with people in the ground supporting rather than jeering and I’m hopeful that will continue because it can’t do any harm.
If we manage to stay up, end up in the top half (not convinced by that one) and we have a decent close season on recruitment then next year is the one to be watching. That is when we’ll see what Megson is made of. We’ll then be watching what is his team entirely.

It’s websites like this still carrying the anti-Megson banner that is causing the grief.
Bolton became stagnant before Allardyce left, who got out at just the right time when his stock was still held in high-regard. Sammy Lee did nothing but make some dud signings (with the exception of O’Brien) and send us plummeting to the bottom of the table, and Gary Megson came in and steadied the boat.
He’s bought players in with more class then Sammy Lee did and that are better and more exciting than what Allardyce managed in his final years. Plus its a team that’s got years in them – unlike Allardyce where you’re wondering whether the legs will last another season.
The fact is Bolton is fighting in the weight-class it should be when you’re all expecting Europe when there’s the top 4, Villa, City and Tottenham all with massive wallets spending way above our means. Comfortable survival is this years realistic target at the start of the season and its been achieved.
Start chanting for him to get out when the club is heading in the wrong direction. Tony Adams got more support from his fans then Bolton give Megson.

Those who support Megson, how do you justify his total tactical ineptitude. Yes he has brought in some good players, but tactically he is an imbecile.
Against Utd we were holding our own, when Meggo brings on a third central defender, can anyone name the last time we played three at the back. Not only that but the guy he choose had arrived the day before and probably did not even know the players names let alone have any idea how to play with them. We have lost every game against the top six sides this season. It is in those games that tactical acumen is demonstrated. The games against teams who are about the same standard or worse can be won by the players alone, but when the opposition is better man for man the manager has to step up, Megson cannot step up. His substitutions are pointless and usually woefully too late. The way the team dropped back against Blackburn was a disgrace and if it was not his choice, which I don’t believe as it was systematic, then he should be able to control his players better. He is a bad manager and needs to be fired.

Lets be honest…. Sam left at a good time for him! Before mid to lower league teams were investing heavily. Meggers has still a bit to prove but he did get us out of the crap last season, anyone who went to the likes of macedonia to see us draw 1-1 with a set of part timers(they played like it) under sammy lee can surely see how much that team improved by the end of last season. Since taking over he has took on some good players… steinsson, taylor, cahill, elmander (he will prove himself), secured contracts for jussi, davies and al habsi, and being honest were sat in the league with teams around us with high profile owners with plenty of cash to burn. Lets get behind him and the lads! We talk about subs and tactics but you can review any decision in hindsight! what about the good decisions… like loosing nolan? sorry guys, but he was far past it 2 yrs ago! Come on you whites!!
